Due Lune Nerello Mascalese - Nero d'Avola 2017

Cantina Cellaro Nerello Mascalese Nero d'Avola

A lovely, dark concoction of 2 indigenous Sicillian grapes; Nerello Mascalese and Nero d'Avola. This has resulted in a full bodied, powerful red with flavours of black forest gateau, spice and mocha dry tannins, evolving finish.

The vineyards stretch between 300 and 600 metres above sea level, on soils with an enviable geological composition.

The branch of Nerello grapes are cut so as to allow a natural withering of the grapes. This process together with the hot Sicilian sun and the warms winds from Africa, concentrates the sugar, After about 15-20 days, the grapes have lost about 15-20% of their weight and are then pressed. Fermentation takes place on the skins.

After a long maceration, the wine is placed into French and American oak barrels for about 6 months.

Cellaro is a modern producer operating under the umbrella of the Farnese group. It is situated near Sambuca, in the Belice Valley. In 2016 Sambuca was officially acknowledged as the most beautiful small village in Italy. Sambuca, originally founded by ancient Greek colonists, rose to regional prominence as a trading hub after invading Arab Muslims took over around 830, just a few years after landing in Sicily. It was called Zabuth, in remembrance of the emir Zabut ("The Splendid One") Al-Arab, who built a castle at that place, on the slopes of Mount Genuardo.

Great ruby red color with garnet reflections. Explosive bouquet of ripe cherries and blackberries, oriental spices, with hints of dried fruit. Harmonious, lively and well-structured taste. Perfectly balanced tannins, a slight natural residual sweetness and refreshing acidity round off this exceptional wine. Balanced and long-lasting aftertaste.
