Ca' dei Frati Ronchedone 2017

Vines used: Marzemino, Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
Refinement and development: in barriques for 14 months, followed by ten months in the bottle

Marzemino is an indigenous variety grown mostly in northern Italy, making up the most of the Ronchedone blend, with a touch of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is ripe fruit notes intertwined with balsam and woody herbs.

A deep, dark wine showing a vibrant, fruit-forward bouquet with aromas of ripe blueberries, freshly made jam, a touch of balsam, and some herbal notes which follow through to the rounded, red and black fruit palate. The clean, savory character is balanced with round tannins and freshness on the finish, which is typical of the area.

In the area where the first morainic hills rise, remarkably substantial and robust red wines are obtained, and Ronchedone is the ultimate demonstration of this. Highly popular from the moment it began to be realized that certain zones and specific microclimates were suitable to obtain a wine like this. Marzemino, Sangiovese, and 10% Cabernet make this a wine that cannot pass by unnoticed.

The Dal Cero family has transformed there Ca Dei Frati property into a model Italian estate over the past two decades. Back in 1987, they had 12 hectares of vineyard, but now, following the purchase of a large chunk of prime vineyard in 2008, they have over 100. An increase has matched this increase in quantity in quality, and today they remain the best producers in Lugana. Marzemino and Sangiovese are the main grapes for Ronchedone, together with a maximum of 10% of Cabernet Sauvignon. Maceration and fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with extended skin contact. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrique where the wine remained for 14 months, followed by ten months in bottle. Lovely depth of color and a ripe, vibrantly fruity nose, with perfumes of ripe blueberries, freshly made jam, a touch of balsam, and some herbal notes which follow through to the rounded, red and black fruit palate. Clean and savory on the palate, with round tannins and freshness on the finish, which is typical of the area.
