San Guido Sassicaia 2017
Hailed a curvy, racy beauty from Antonio Galloni, and a fascinating wine from Monica Larner, Sassicaia 2017 is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Sassicaia 2017 is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. In her preview assessment of the wine, Larner describes incredibly well the tension existing from vintner and vintage and how, like in this case, the vintner comes out on top. Far from an easy vintage, 2017 has the merit to emphasize how incredibly exceptional Tenuta San Guido’s terroir and how skilled the winemaking team is. Despite sustained temperatures throughout the growing season and summer and very little rainfall, Sassicaia 2017 has retained remarkable purity, elegance, and precision.
By any stretch of the imagination, Sassicaia 2017 is a remarkable achievement – born out of some of the hottest temperatures ever recorded in Tuscany and yet being a wine of great freshness, elegance, and precision. They say that you should always follow a winemaker, not a vintage and in the case of Tenuta San Guido, never was a more accurate word spoken as Peter Dean assesses the Sassicaia 2017 alongside the estate’s other two wines Guidalberto, 2018 and Le Difese 2018 in the company of Priscilla Incisa Della Rochetta, the granddaughter of the estate’s visionary founder.
The Sassicaia 2017 was tasted alongside Sassicaia 2007 as Tenuta San Guido sees this as a similar vintage.
A cliché, perhaps, but the skill of a great winemaker is to produce a good wine in the most difficult of circumstances. Not only has Tenuta San Guido done this with Sassicaia 2017, which had its release yesterday, but this grand Italian estate has also managed to do this consistently irrespective of how changeable the climate is becoming.
2017 was one such difficult vintage – lots of heat, little rain – so that the berries were smaller and the overall yield reduced. The 2017 Sassicaia is a remarkable showing from this challenging vintage that experienced high temperatures and drought for most of the growing season. 2017 is nothing short of total success and should not be overlooked.
