This limited edition is a tribute to the birth of Viña Pomal in 1908, coinciding with the 2010 vintage, a historic vintage in Bodegas Bilbaínas and qualified as excellent by the Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja. This special edition is the result of a selection of 106 barrels made by Alejandro López, oenologist of Bodegas Bilbaínas. 90% Tempranillo, 5% Grenache and 5% Graciano, aged 20 months in French and American oak barrels. The design of the label has recovered the same Bilbao blue color, a city that gives its name to Bodegas Bilbaínas.
Spicy notes of liquorice and dark berries, violets and fennel. Mineral background with notes of chocolate and fine wood (cedar).
Structured and tasty wine with great persistence and balance.
A personal selection of the winemaker from among the best Viña Pomal wines. Fermented with indigenous yeast strains at 28-30 °C and total maceration time of 25 days. It is aged for 20 months in American (84%) and French (16%) oak barrels. One third of the barrels are new. During this time, periodic rackings allow us to clarify the wine through natural decanting. After barrel ageing, the wine is aged for two years in the bottle before being put on the market.
The Viña Pomal estate covers 90 hectares of vineyards. Located in Haro municipality, and just 2 kilometres from the winery, in one of the town’s most beautiful enclaves overlooking the Ebro River as it flows through Conchas de Haro.
Our estate features different ecosystems, which vary depending on soil composition and sun exposure, and this means exhaustive work in selecting homogenous zones. Our viticulture practices are a combination between traditional Rioja methods and precision winegrowing that opts for innovation in order to protect nature, and always with a view to obtaining maximum quality.
This vintage was marked by the incidence of drought. Little rainfall from the winter onwards marked the course of the entire growing cycle. Our vineyards in Haro benefited from the cooler climate and suffered the impact of the drought less severely than other areas. Marked water stress during the months prior to harvest led to lower yields. This forced us to make a considerable selection effort, deciding the optimal time of harvest plot by plot.
