Clos l’eglise Pomerol 2004

When it comes to producing wines that are fresh, well-balanced and rich in flavour, husband and wife team Helene and Patrice Leveque seem to know the secret. Making the most of their 6 hectares (15 acres) estate, the duo often experiment with controversial techniques such as blending grapes at varying levels of ripeness – which very much goes against the grain in Bordeaux. They start the harvest early and finish late, allowing them to produce wines with fascinating complexity.

Ruby-red. Deep aromas and flavors of roasted black raspberry and chocolate. Rich, chewy and deep; this really spreads out to saturate the entire palate. Finishes with compelling sweetness and breadth, with substantial horizontal tannins. This boasts an almost exotic ripeness in the context of the vintage.

Since the acquisition of this estate in 1987 by the Garcin family, Clos l’Eglise has been consistently one of the top half dozen or so Pomerols, and once again, they have come through magnificently in 2004. A brilliant blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2004 boasts a deep plum/ruby color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of melted caramel, coffee, black cherries, figs, and plums. Full-bodied, rich, and textured, it is atypical in that it does not resemble the more linear, tarter style of most 2004s." - Robert Parker Jr
