Ramon Bilbao Vinedos de Altura 2016
"Altura is the Ramon Bilbao flagship, a 50/50 blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha - the former from the Abalos cru and the latter from the Tudelilla cru; Alta meets Baja. The plots are vinified and aged separately, the Tempranillo in 225l barrels and the Garnacha in 500l vats. From the slightly cooler 2016 vintage (in comparison with 2017, at any rate) the wine is a triumphant marriage of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, the latter ensuring deep colour and beautifully ripe fruit, mostly from the darker end of the spectrum, while the former brings freshness and poise. Notes of parma violet, liquorice and dark chocolate underline both the inherent complexity and the excellent value. There is a lot going on here."

The Vinedos de Altura has a medium intensity ruby red colour and has a clean, bright appearance. On the nose there are aromas of aromatic herbs, red fruits and hints of balsamic combined with spicy notes and white pepper. The palate is fresh and pleasant. It has good acidity with firm but smooth tannin and has the aura of a wine that is in harmony as well as being elegant. It is certainly a wine that will continue to evolve but is ready to drink now.
