Marani Satrapezo Saperavi 2016
The nose shows a strong blackberry, prune and vanilla oak nose with some notes of tobacco. The full bodied initial palate exhibits sweet black fruit and dried berry flavors. The middle palate is soft and round with well integrated complex of grape and oak tannins. The finish is long and spicy supported again by ripe tannins.
Saperavi is an autochthonous georgian grape. The SATRAPEZO Saperavi is produced according to ancient winemaking techniques, in amphora (Qvevri) buried in the traditional wine cellar.
A fine Georgian red wine using hand harvested Saperavi grapes lightly crushed into historical Kvevri Georgian clay wine vessels, before being buried in the winery's earthen floor for up to 1 month. 24 months' maturation in new oak barriques follows, before bottling unfiltered with 6 months' bottle ageing before release. Aromas of complex vanilla oak and concentrated forest berries flow on to a silky soft palate of blackcurrant, liquorice notes, ripe tannins and a long finish.
In selected blocks of the Kondoli Vineyard grapes are harvested green in early august at the bottom of the vines. This reduces the yield to less than 4-5 t / ha. It leads to the improvement of the quality and concentration of the remaining fruits. At the end of september, the ripe grapes are hand-picked in small boxes and sorted by hand at the winery.
The fermentation takes place with skin and seeds in the Qvevri. After aging for 30 days, the wine is decanted and further matured for 24 months in traditional new oak barrels. The wine is bottled unfiltered. Deep red color. The nose is filled with intense red and black berries, mint leaves, spices and vanilla flavors. Full body with black cherry jam. Round in the middle, soft and aromatic. Fresh strawberry and eucalyptus notes balanced with ripe grape tannins. Benefits from storage for 10 more years.
